A bicyclist was seriously injured Thursday night when a 18-wheeler hit him after he ran a red traffic light, police said.

The 44-year-old bicyclist was taken to University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and was expected to recover. Police said the man might have been drunk when the accident occurred. It was not immediately known if he would be cited for a traffic violation.

The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. at Brooklyn Avenue near Interstate 35. The bicyclist was westbound on Brooklyn Avenue when he allegedly disregarded a red traffic light. The 18-wheeler exited the highway and slammed into the man, throwing him nearly 40 feet, police said.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured and will not face any charges, police said.
