A Norwalk bicyclist is in critical condition after being struck head-on by a motor vehicle Thursday afternoon in Westport, police and hospital officials said.

Thomas Toal, 50, was still in critical condition at Norwalk Hospital Thursday night, a nursing supervisor said.

Toal was riding his bicycle through the busy intersection of North Compo Road and East Main Street shortly before 11:30 a.m. when the accident occurred, Westport Police Capt. Sam Arciola said.

A preliminary investigation determined that the unidentified motor vehicle turned left from North Compo Road into the oncoming path of the bicyclist, he said.

Police closed the road for approximately an hour and a half while Toal was taken to Norwalk Hospital by a Westport Emergency Medical Service ambulance, Arciola said.

No charges have yet been filed against the driver of the vehicle, who was not injured in the accident, he said.

The police captain said the incident is currently being investigated by members of the Westport Police Department Accident Investigation Team.
