A St. Mary’s County man out for a bike ride was killed Monday when he was struck by a car on Clarkes Landing Road in the Hollywood area, police said.

Curtis A. Leymeister, 47, of Hollywood was riding west on Clarkes Landing Road near Scotch Neck Road when his bike was hit from behind by a Honda Accord. The impact threw Leymeister from the bicycle, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Accord, 20-year-old Kathy May Lee of Hollywood, was unharmed, police said. She was on her way to classes at the College of Southern Maryland and apparently did not see Leymeister, police said.

Police said the fact that Leymeister was traveling in the main roadway, rather than on the shoulder, was considered a major contributor in the crash. They said they were exploring other factors.

Lee told investigators she was traveling at the posted speed limit of 40 mph at the time of the crash, authorities said. The incident occurred just before 8 a.m.

Lee and Leymeister’s family declined to comment about the crash.
