Austin bicyclists have a new, safe way to travel.
City officials celebrated the opening of its new bicycle boulevard Monday. Bicyclists made the inaugural ride on the Rio Grande Roadway. The two-lane cycle track runs from Martin Luther King Drive to 24th Street.
The bicycle boulevard will be buffered by pillars to help cyclists and cars share the road.
“The goal is to provide safe facilities for bicyclists of all levels, so we can achieve the goal of increasing bicycling, not only from a recreational standpoint, but as a serious way to commute,” Director of Public Works Department Howard Lazarus said.
According to the Public Works Department, the next big signature project will be extending the Lance Armstrong bike way through Downtown.
The bike way will connect Third Street to a section that currently ends at Shoal Creek and picks up again near the Austin Convention Center.
