ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A young woman who was high on methamphetamines when her car hit and killed a bicyclist in Albuquerque will spend the next nine years in prison.
KOB-TV in Albuquerque reports (https://bit.ly/QlxSF4 ) District Judge Ross Sanchez handed down the maximum sentence for 21-year-old Memori Hardwick on Friday.
Hardwick was driving to buy more meth in May 2011 when she ran down avid cyclist Matt Trujillo and left the scene. The 36-year-old bicyclist died two weeks later.
She pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a deadly accident, and possession of methamphetamine charges in June.
Trujillo’s brother Josh told the judge Friday that Memori left his brother to die.
Hardwick told the judge she’s been an addict since she was 12.
