WGHP: Woman Charged in Cyclist’s Death Was Driving with Revoked License

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Eden woman charged with hitting and killing a bicyclist on a Guilford County road last month was driving with a revoked license at the time, according to police.
Records show Grayson Dawson’s license was revoked after she failed to appear in court for a June 2007 incident in Rockingham County. At that time she was charged with exceeding a safe speed, driving the wrong way on a two-lane road, having no insurance and driving with no operator’s license, which means she didn’t have her license with her.
On Monday, Dawson was charged with felony hit and run, misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and driving with a revoked license in connection with the death of David Sherman.
Authorities said Dawson was driving north on Church St. near N.C. 150 when she crossed the center line and his Sherman on his bike head-on Oct. 23.
Troopers said Dawson failed to stop after hitting Sherman.
Greensboro traffic Sgt. Wayne Redfearn estimates three out of five people he stops are driving with a revoked license, but there is little police can do.
“Sometimes there are people leaving the scene because they have a license violation, which includes driving with your license revoked or no license at all,” said Redfearn.
If someone is caught behind the wheel when they shouldn’t be, Redfearn said their car will be towed and the driver could serve up to two years in jail and have an additional year of their license suspended.
Dawson is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 2.
