INDIANAPOLIS – Travelers to Indianapolis will need to heed three new bicycle ordinances in the state capital or risk getting a ticket.
The city says the new ordinances that took effect Jan. 1 are intended to improve safety for both bicyclists and motorists and ensure the proper use of bicycle lanes.
The ordinances say bike lanes are to be used exclusively for bicycles and that cyclists have the right of way in those lanes. The ordinances also prohibit driving, standing or parking in a bike lane or bike path. They also establish a minimum passing distance of 3 feet for vehicles passing a cyclist.
Indianapolis was designated a “Bicycle Friendly City” by the League of American Bicyclists in October.
