KMTR Eugene: Cyclist killed in crash near Goshen

Goshen (KMTR) – Oregon State Police closed down Highway 99 near Goshen for several hours after a deadly crash around 9:20 p.m. Wednesday night.
A 38-year-old Creswell-area man riding a bicycle was killed when he was hit by a car. Police have identified the victim as John Marsh Cayton.
Investigators say Cayton, who was pedaling north on Highway 99, was wearing dark clothing and was not using lights. A woman who was driving a Ford Focus was heading the same direction said she saw the biker and moved over to avoid him.
At the same time, troopers say a woman driving a white Chrysler heading south had finished passing two other cars but was still partially in the northbound lane. The two cars swerved and sideswiped each other on their passenger sides. The Chrysler then hit the bicyclist, killing him.
Oregon State Police Sergeant Andy Kenyon said, “There’s absolutely no shoulder in this area. It’s basically the width of the fog line, so this bicyclist was probably riding, basically, in the roadway, for all practical purposes, so the northbound motorist gave him a little bit of room.”
Sgt. Kenyon said the driver of the car passing the bicyclist appears to have been doing the right thing by giving him room, but troopers are not so sure that the driver heading south was passing safely.
