Police continued to question a “person of interest” Wednesday night after a bicyclist was caught in a gang-related conflict between two drivers and was fatally struck Tuesday by a van in the Northwest Side Logan Square neighborhood.
Jepson Livingston, 32, of the 2700 block of North St. Louis Avenue, was hit while riding a bike in the 3800 block West Diversey Avenue, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. He was pronounced dead at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center at 12:57 p.m.
A Wednesday autopsy revealed Livingston died from multiple injuries from a van striking a bicycle and the death was ruled a homicide, the medical examiner’s office said.
The cyclist was struck by a van about 12:30 p.m., according to police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli. It appears the van veered into the path of the bicycle and struck him. The driver of the van then fled on foot, leaving the van at the scene reportedly with passengers inside.
A police source said the Livingston’s death does not appear to be “accidental.”
Police said the drivers of two vehicles were involved in a gang-conflict prior to Livingston being struck. Livingston was apparently an “innocent bystander.”
A “person of interest” remained in custody at 9 p.m., although charges had not been filed, police said.
Grand Central Area detectives are investigating with the Major Accident Investigation Unit.
