A cyclist has been struck in a Boulder crosswalk equipped with flashing warning lights for the second time in as many months, police said Thursday.

University of Colorado sophomore Gillian Stewart-Moore, 20, was hit by a car as she crossed Baseline Road just east of Broadway around 11:45 a.m. Wednesday.

She was taken to a hospital with facial lacerations and non-life-threatening injuries to her foot and arm, police spokeswoman Sarah Huntley said.

Huntley said three witnesses told police the lights at the crosswalk were flashing at the time of the collision. Stewart-Moore, who was on her bike as she crossed the busy street, was observing the law by traveling at pedestrian speed, Huntley said.

The driver, 21-year-old Jenny Wannier, was ticketed for careless driving resulting in injury.

Wannier is also a CU student.

This week’s collision follows an Aug. 7 accident at a light-equipped crosswalk at Iris Avenue and 28th Street, in which a 7-year-old boy was hit by a car while riding across the crossing with his mother and sister.

The boy, Hayden Zadow, was sent to the intensive care unit with serious injuries. The teenage driver who hit the boy was ticketed with two counts of careless driving resulting in injuries.

Huntley said Stewart-Moore had noted that the lane of traffic closest to her had come to a stop and rode out from the median into the road. She was hit while entering the far lane of traffic, Huntley said.

Wannier, who was driving westbound on Baseline, told police she switched lanes to avoid hitting vehicles that had suddenly stopped in front of her at the crosswalk and didn’t see the cyclist until it was too late.
