High Point, NC — Hundreds of cyclists gathered together in High Point in memory of one of their own. On October 24, 2009, a hit-and-run driver killed 55-year-old David Sherman on N. Church Street in Guilford County.

On Sunday, November 15, 2009, almost 600 people arrived to ride in his memory. The organizers of the ride, three of David’s closest friends, told WFMY News 2’s Ashley Smith, they wanted to accomplish three things. One, raise money for ’Yield to Life’, a group that fights for the safety of cyclists. Two, send the message that bicycles and cars can exist on the road together. And last, but not least, to raise awareness about the hit-and-run case that led to Sherman’s death.

Robert Lippitt, one of the organizers, said, “We are trying to get across the message to certain people that in the next few weeks we are going to be watching this case and we want to make sure they do the right thing and it is pursued aggressively and vigorously as it should.”

The environment before the ride was positively energized, but Dave’s friends didn’t hold any punches when addressing the crowd. Lippitt said, “This isn’t a group that is going quietly into the night. We are angry, motivated, energized and we demand justice for our friend David.”

The message riders wanted to community to take away from this event was overall awareness. Don Shaw, another organizer of the ride, said, “It hits home because it could have been any of us. It could have been any one of us. I think you are seeing the rally of support, the rally that we need to try to do something to try and further the idea that we are all going to be on the roads together and we need to find a way to get along.”

The ride raised more than $10,000 for ’Yield to Life’ — a group that fights for the safety of cyclists.
