The Albert Lea Tribune: Editorial: Bike numbers encouraging
October 10, 2011
The number of pedestrian and bicyclist deaths in Minnesota is down this year. That’s a good sign that motorists, walkers and bike riders have learned how to work together better.
There have been 18 pedestrians killed in Minnesota this year. That’s down from 25 at this time in 2010. Three cyclists have died this year compared with eight at this time a year ago.
Any time cities install infrastructure for bicyclists and pedestrians, there always is a learning curve. It takes time for people to adjust.
More drivers are stopping for pedestrians wanting to cross the street. More drivers are seeing bicyclists.
However, state officials caution that as the days are getting shorter the streets become more dangerous for pedestrians and bicyclists. October is one of the deadliest months for pedestrians especially.
We hope 2011 ends better than 2010 for these numbers. Any lives saved are worth it.
