BBC: Man guilty over cyclist death
A man has been found guilty of causing the death by dangerous driving of top Irish road racing cyclist David McCall.
The Commonwealth Games medallist was knocked down by Michael Gerard Groome, 27, from Cliftonville Road in Belfast.
Mr McCall was taking part in a race near Nutt’s Corner in County Antrim in August 2008 when he was fatally injured.
Groome had been hurrying to catch a flight at the international airport when he hit Mr McCall’s bicycle.
He was overtaking another vehicle when the collision happened.
He initially failed to stop but returned to the scene a short time later.
He was released on bail and will be sentenced next month.
Mr McCall, 46 and a father of two, worked as a civil servant and also jointly ran Sportactive, which organises cycling and walking holidays.
He was a member of the Maryland Wheelers club in Lisburn and had won many cycling honours in Europe and Ireland.
His club have established a charitable foundation in his name.
