A Philadelphia man has been indicted by the McMinn County Grand Jury on vehicular homicide charges stemming from an April 11 traffic accident in Athens that left a bicyclist dead.
Andrew Shipman, 21, of 188 Settenberg Road, Philadelphia, who was also listed with a Washington Avenue address in Athens, was served Monday with an indictment on a charge of vehicular homicide.
According to reports from that time, Shipman was driving on Cook Drive on April 11 around 9:30 p.m. when he struck bicycle rider Michael Cumbus, 39, of 351 County Road 130, Athens.
When police arrived, they found Cumbus and his bike lying several feet from the roadway. The bicycle had damage to its rear wheel. It was believed he was cycling to visit family on Kilgore Street.
Cumbus was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to UT Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.
No charges where filed against Shipman initially as officials awaited results from the investigation and the toxicology tests.
Shipman is scheduled to appear in McMinn County Criminal Court next month for arraignment.
