A woman sentenced to three years in prison for killing two bicyclists in Colorado Springs lost her first bid at parole Wednesday.
A state parole panel turned down the request from Barbara Thomas, 65, following a hearing at the Denver Women’s Correctional Facility, according to spokeswoman Katherine Sanguinetti. Thomas will not be eligible for parole for another year.
She was sentenced in June after she had pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular manslaughter in the Aug. 6, 2008, deaths of Edgar “E.J.” Juarez, 30, and Jason Kilroy, 28.
Thomas was accused of plowing a pickup truck into a group of five bicyclists on South 26th Street near West Colorado Avenue while under the influence of prescription morphine and barbiturates. She also was not wearing her required eyeglasses, police said.
